Clinic Director and Senior Economist, Liz Stanton, PhD, Senior Researcher Ricardo Lopez, and Researcher Bryndis Woods produced a white paper evaluating the Proposed Rulemaking, finding that several of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assumptions and conclusions are unfounded. In August 2018, the NHSTA and EPA published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking regarding “The Safer Affordable Fuel Efficient (SAFE) Vehicles Rule for Model Years 2021-2026 Passenger Cars and Light Trucks”. Applied Economics Clinic found that if approved, this would revise Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) standards, making them less stringent.
