Research Assistants (RAs) are current graduate students or exceptional undergraduate students studying economics, energy, or an environmental-related field. RAs assist our team by summarizing written materials, collecting data, managing research databases, writing policy memos, and assisting with other research and analysis tasks as needed. The Communication Assistant (CA) is a graduate student studying media, communications, public relations, or a related media field. CAs assist the team by managing the AEC website and social media accounts, managing project databases, posting blog pieces, writing blog pieces, and drafting our monthly newsletter.
Clark University, Masters in Public Administration Candidate
Lila McNamee is a research assistant at the Applied Economics Clinic for the 2024 spring semester. She is currently a graduate student at Clark University getting her Masters in Public Administration. Before this, Lila graduated from Clark University in 2023 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with a concentration in Ethics and Public Policy. As a senior, she completed a thesis focusing on the causes of homelessness in the United States.
Previously, Lila has had multiple internships in the sustainability field as a researcher. She has worked on projects covering carbon emission trading, nuclear energy, and how social media impacts how citizens view democratic systems. She is proficient in data collection and organization, Excel, and Stata.
Boston University, Institute for Global Sustainability PhD Candidate
Alicia Zhang is a PhD candidate in Boston University’s Department of Earth and Environment and a Research Assistant at Boston University’s Institute for Global Sustainability. Ms. Zhang is interested in how sustainable and responsible measures in the policy sphere can help achieve improvements in climate change mitigation and environmental justice, as well as help accelerate the ‘green’ energy transition. Prior to BU, Ms. Zhang has worked at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and for the National Park Service. She holds a B.A. in International Affairs and Psychology, minoring in Economics, from Washington University in St. Louis.
Boston University, Masters in Emerging Media Studies
Nidhi Shetty was a Communication Assistant at the Applied Economic Clinics (AEC). She graduated from Boston University, where she earned a Master of Arts degree in Emerging Media Studies. Prior to pursuing her master's degree, Nidhi gained valuable experience as a professional in the Advertising Technology industry. During her time in this field, she delved into the intricacies of user-centered design and the strategies employed in communicating advertisements to engage and excite viewers. This experience ignited her passion for exploring the impact of emerging media and communication modes on human behavior and society. It was during her tenure at BU that Nidhi honed her academic research skills by actively participating in client-based projects, further enriching her understanding of the dynamic intersection between media, technology, and economics. Nidhi Shetty's academic journey also included a significant role as a Research Assistant to her professor at Boston University. She conducted research focused on misinformation and disinformation related to climate change within the realm of online advertising formats. This experience proved to be profoundly insightful for her, offering a deeper understanding of global advertising regulations and the broader implications of climate-related messaging in digital media.

Illustrious Ewhorlu was a Research Assistant at the Applied Economics Clinic. Prior to joining AEC, he worked as an Energy & Utilities Decarbonization Fellow at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), where he worked on developing a comprehensive decarbonization plan specifically tailored for the UNH Energy and Utilities department. Before that, in 2022, he won the prestigious QS World Merit Social Responsibility Scholarship for his strong level of environmental awareness and sense of social responsibility and was a Leaders Fellow at Student Energy.
Illustrious is currently an MS Candidate in Sustainability at Tufts University, where I focus on global sustainable development based on the concept of Just Sustainablilities (Agyeman et al., 2003).
Clark University, Economics PhD Candidate
Nayantara Biswas is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Economics at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. She specializes in applied microeconomics, particularly in the fields of health, labor, and gender economics in low-income settings. To do this, she uses data-driven techniques in evidence-based policy research with a focus on equity. In her dissertation, she studies the impact of community health workers on maternal and child health and labor outcomes in India. Her other work examines the effects of parental leave and work flexibility on minority groups in India and the US. She is passionate about finding creative solutions to address the needs of underserved populations by using specialized quantitative and qualitative techniques to influence policies. She is an expert in causal inference methods, including difference-in-differences, fixed effects, regression discontinuity, instrumental variables, and hazard models. She has published in JAMA Health Forum.
Prior to joining the Applied Economics Clinic as a Research Fellow in Cannabis Equity, Nayantara held several part-time faculty and research positions at Clark University. She taught undergraduate students statistics along with other introductory courses in micro and macroeconomics. She holds a Master of Arts in Economics from Clark University, a Master of Science in Economics from the University of Calcutta, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Loreto College, Kolkata, India.
University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Economics PhD Candidate
Alannah Shute is a Research Fellow for Cannabis Equity at the Applied Economics Clinic. She is pursuing a Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where she is a Graduate Research Assistant in the Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research. Her dissertation is focused on state and local taxation. In one paper she examines the impact of hurricane Sandy on New York City’s property tax system. Prior to her graduate studies, she completed an internship and worked as a Research Assistant at the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy where she researched tax policy and K-12 education. She holds a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Mathematics from Simmons University.
University of Massachusetts, Boston, Applied Economics MA Candidate
Michelle Borges is a research assistant at the Applied Economic Clinic. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Universidade Franciscana in Brazil in 2021 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Applied Economics at the University of Massachusetts Boston. She is also working as a research assistant at the Mauricio Gastón Institute for Latino Community Development and Public Policy, where her most recent work is a demographic and economic profile of the Brazilians living in the United States and in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Prior to her role at AEC, she worked at the UNESCO Chair "Women, Development, and Cultures" analyzing data on the impacts of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Maternity in Catalonia. Through a variety of research assistantships and her coursework, she developed data analysis skills in Microsoft Excel, SPSS, and Stata. Her research interests span the areas of Labor Economics, Development Economics, Immigration, Environmental Justice, and Feminist Economics.
The Fletcher School, Tufts University, Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy Candidate
Liam Knox is a second-year Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy student at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. His work there focuses on business and policy strategies for clean technology development, with a particular interest in offshore wind generation and grid-scale energy storage systems. Prior to joining the Applied Economics Clinic as a Communications Assistant, he was a Business Analyst at The Midtown Group in Washington, D.C., where he analyzed the company’s software data to deliver critical insights and direct decision-making. He has also served as a Clean Energy Research Intern for Boundary Stone Partners and as an Intern for the Business Council for International Understanding. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Computer Science from Middlebury College.

Myisha Majumder is a graduate student at The Fletcher School at Tufts University, concentrating in International Business and International Development and Environment Policy. Prior to her time at Fletcher, Ms. Majumder worked at AEC for three years while completing her B.S. in Civil Engineering and Quantitative Economics at Tufts. In Summer 2021, Ms. Majumder interned for Clearway Energy Group, a leading renewable developer, assisting with data analytics on their investment and asset management teams.
Tufts University, Environmental Science and International Relations
David Jiang is a fourth-year undergraduate studying Environmental Science and International Relations at the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University. Mr. Jiang is interested in clean
energy policy, especially regarding how to implement an equitable and sustainable rollout while navigating the unique energy needs and stakeholders of a state, region, or country. Prior to this, he has worked as a Policy & Governmental Affairs Intern for Northeast Clean Energy Council (NECEC), representing clean energy companies and investors across state legislatures of New England and New York. Mr. Jiang has also served on his town of Carlisle’s Master Plan Committee, where he worked on projects related to conservation land management and the municipality’s Net Zero Plan. For his role on the committee, Mr. Jiang was awarded the 2021 Norton Nickerson Environmental Internship Grant, by the Tufts University Environmental Studies Department.
Brandeis University, Sustainable International Development
Felix Akoyam worked as a Communications Specialist with over five years of experience working with media networks, non-profits/CSOs in Africa, and the United States who work to advance social justice. As reporter and editor, Mr. Akoyam produced several impactful reports/programs on inequality, poverty, diversity and inclusion, health, and democracy across radio, tv, and digital platforms. Mr. Akoyam is passionate about using communication to advance social justice. He is also interested in how marginalized urban communities in the United States and developing countries can build climate resilience while improving their economic conditions.
He holds a Master of Arts in Sustainable International Development from Brandeis University where he worked as a Graduate Teaching and Research Assistant, where and provided in-depth assistance with academic resources, research strategies, and educational technologies to support researchers ranging from first-year undergraduate students to advanced doctoral students, faculty. Mr. Akoyam also worked as a Communications Fellow with Public Democracy America, where he was part of a team that designed advocacy and media strategies to dismantle barriers faced by minorities while empowering marginalized communities in the United States.
Emerging Media Studies
Nicole Yang worked as Communication Assistant at the Applied Economics Clinic. She recently graduated from Boston University with her Master of Arts degree in Emerging Media Studies. It was here that she developed industry and academic research skills through various client-based projects. Projects included a curriculum development focus group study, a quantitative analysis of Twitter activity between the 2020 election and January 6th insurrection, and a redesign of the Residential Housing Association website. In addition to studies on technology, Ms. Yang’s primary area of focus throughout her education has been intercultural communication and equity, and how these two fields can be combined to improve communities and overall society.
Prior to joining the Applied Economics Clinic, Ms. Yang completed an AmeriCorps service year with the Community Technology Empowerment Project in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She worked on projects to close the digital divide in adult education organizations in the Twin Cities metro area. In this position she taught computer classes, created online resources for teachers, and made a website sharing digital and intercultural training resources. She has also held positions as a TA and a tutor with Boston University during her time as a student. In these positions, she taught students communication theories and writing skills. She is driven by a desire to better her community through education and equity.

Fernanda De La Torre (she/her) is a Sustainable International Development graduate student at Brandeis University. Ms. De La Torre also works as a Graduate Research Assistant at the Institute for Child, Youth, and Family Policy and is involved with the Office of Sustainability at Brandeis University. Her past work has been on refugee resettlement, international hunger crisis, monitoring and evaluation, and unaffordable housing. Ms. De La Torre is interested in environmental justice, research and evaluation, and social policy. She is currently in the process of writing her master’s thesis as a policy brief regarding St. Paul, Minnesota’s Urban Heat Islands.
Ms. De La Torre is set to graduate with her Master of Arts in February 2023 and holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, Politics and Policy in the Global Economy, Environmental Studies minor from the University of Wisconsin Madison, and an Evaluation Studies Graduate certificate from University of Wisconsin Stout.

Gervase Adams is a graduate of Tufts University, where he obtained a Masters of Science in Economics. He has also received a Masters of Arts in Sustainable International Development from Brandeis University. Mr. Adams is a fellow with The Resolution Project Inc. through his community development project, Komaale Initiative in the Upper West region of Ghana, which works with subsistence farmers to build low-cost irrigation systems as a livelihood diversification strategy. He has worked for five years conducting applied research in climate change resilience, livelihood diversifications and human security through his academic research projects and from previous work. Prior to joining AEC, Mr. Adams worked as a Program Manager for the non-profit Pathway to Possible, in Newton, MA, helping individuals in a congregate setting to seamlessly navigate the Covid-19 pandemic. He also worked as a Research Assistant with the Brandeis Heller School Centre for Global Development and Sustainability where he served as a research lead on projects regarding climate change and livelihood diversification strategies.

Levi Bevis is a Master of Arts in Emerging Media Studies (EMS)
Candidate at the Boston University College of Communication. He holds interests in policy, law, and strategic communications, and he is especially interested in exploring the impact of political campaign media on mass audiences through both traditional and social media. Levi holds a B.A. degree in Public Policy Leadership from the University of Mississippi, and he currently serves as the president of the University of Mississippi LGBTQIA+ Alumni Chapter.
Prior to enrolling at Boston University, Levi worked in various political and communications capacities. He has served as a Legislative Intern with Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) in Washington, D.C.; worked as a Voter Contact Canvass Deputy Director in Portland, Maine, during the 2020 campaign cycle; and worked as the Communications Team Coordinator with Flagship Pioneering in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Tufts University, Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning M.A. Candidate
Grace Wu is a Master of Arts in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning candidate at Tufts University. At Tufts, she works as a research assistant for two projects – one focuses on the geo-environmental effects of the 2018 Sulawesi, Indonesia earthquake and tsunami; the other examines how climate change impacts urban migration in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Kampala, Uganda. Her studies focus on the intersection between environmental justice, environmental policy, and spatial statistical analysis.
Before coming to Tufts, Grace interned as a research assistant at the Foundation of Defense for Democracies and worked as a research assistant at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities where she examined Taiwan’s textile export policy in the 1950s. She holds a B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Sociology from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities.

Gabriel Lewis is a Research Assistant at the Applied Economics Clinic and a PhD candidate in Economics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Mr. Lewis also works with Ina Ganguli at UMass and Richard Freeman at the National Bureau of Economic Research, where he studies the effects of technological change on employment and labor market equity. Before UMass, Mr. Lewis worked at the METRICS Institute at Stanford, evaluating the reproducibility of scientific research using Bayesian statistical methods. He also worked as a policy and advocacy intern at the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society and the Sierra Club, where he represented these organizations in meetings with local governments, wrote reports on local environmental issues, and led a series of ornithological surveys on the living roof of Facebook's headquarters. Mr. Lewis is a graduate of Whitman College, where he studied Economics and minored in Mathematics.

Tsanta works as a Research Assistant at AEC after receiving a Master of Science in Environmental Science and Policy from Clark University where she continues to research on how to build resilience against the impacts of climate change in Mexico. Prior to working at AEC, Tsanta had developed expertise in consultancy, climate finance, carbon offsets, and designing, managing, and monitoring sustainable development programs in interdisciplinary sectors including biodiversity conservation, renewable energy deployment, at non-profit and international organizations.
To pursue her vision for carbon-neutral, nature-friendly, equitable, healthier, and wealthier growth for all nations, Tsanta spoke at the 2019 Youth Climate Summit rally in Worcester, hosted a gallery talk on Carolina Caycedo’s artwork exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston in 2020, and co-founded Tsara&Soa, in 2021,a social venture which markets responsibly handmade products based on Malagasy natural resources in the U.S. while supporting local economic development, bringing relief to climate and social disasters, and building connection between Malagasy and American people

Clarie Marie James worked as a Research Assistant at the Applied Economics Clinic. She holds a B.A. in Economics from University of Southern Maine. Prior to joining AEC she was a Research Assistant at rbouvier consulting where she worked on projects related to water quality trading in the Long Island Sound and the potential economic effects of sea level rise in Southern Maine coastal communities. She has also completed a research internship with the Cooperative Development Institute where she assisted with a study to understand the effects of COVID-19 on food systems in Maine.

Nina is the Executive Director of the Global Center for Climate Justice, which she co-founded in late 2020. Previously, she was the lead researcher and author of the Green New Deal & Just Recovery Plan for City Councilor Michelle Wu. Ms. Schlegel is a longtime climate and environmental justice researcher and activist and has worked with Tufts University, the Applied Economics Clinic, the Conservation Law Foundation, Environment America, The Environmental League of Massachusetts, Boston Climate Action Network, 350MA, and was a delegate to COP23, the international climate conference. Her past work has been on the international climate refugee crisis, urban gentrification, utility injustice, urban planning for climate change, who benefits from voter suppression, and city-level Green New Deals. Ms. Schlegel's current work and the Center's focus are to popularize a "power structure" understanding of why we're in this climate crisis and lift up the just solutions taking place in communities all around the world.

In addition to working as a part-time research assistant at AEC, Hannah Brown is the Research Assistant to the President at the Center for Global Development where she focuses on issues relating to development finance, including international aid and lending to low- and middle-income countries. She holds an M.A. in International Economics and Finance from the Brandeis International Business School and a B.A. in Economics and International and Global Studies from Brandeis University. In the past, she has interned for the Boston Planning & Development Agency, the World Food Programme, and the Union for Reform Judaism Religious Action Center as well as served as undergraduate student government president. Ms. Brown is interested in combining social issues, including sustainability and equity, with economic policy and research.

Before Fletcher, she has five years of experience in the media broadcasting field in South Korea as a news anchor at KBS 24. Emily Chan is a fourth-year undergraduate student studying Public Relations in the College of Communication and Kilachand Honors College at Boston University. Ms. Chan specializes in corporate and public affairs and has previously worked with FleishmanHillard Fishburn in London, the Court Service Center at the Edward W. Brooke Courthouse, and with the Women and Public Policy Program at Harvard Kennedy School. While on campus, Ms. Chan is a staff writer for The Emerald Review, Boston University’s student-run publication focusing on earth and environment, a sister of Sigma Delta Tau sorority, a volunteer at Women’s Lunch Place, and working on her senior research project analyzing targeted political advertising on generation-Z and Millennial demographics over the course of the 2020 US Presidential elections.

Alex Smith is a third-year undergraduate student in the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University. At Tufts, he is majoring in Economics with additional focuses in political theory and urban studies. Mr. Smith is curious about the intersection between power, law and morality, and he strives to better understand complex issues facing our communities. Daniel DiGiovanni is a third-year undergraduate in the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University. Namgay Tshering is a candidate for the MSc. In Environmental Policy and Planning in the Urban and Environmental Planning Department at Tufts University. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Colby-Sawyer College, NH, after which he moved back to his home country of Bhutan for two years. While there, Mr. Tshering worked as a Research Analyst for EcoCall Consultancy, a private firm focused on sustainable development and economics. He also conducted research for the Ministry of Economic Affairs on a project funded by the Asian Development Bank. His primary interests are in environmental policy, and the use of economic incentives to sustainable living.

Anamika Sen is a second-year PhD student in the Economics Department at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Prior to this, she received a M.A. in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, India and a B.A. (with honors) in Economics from Jadavpur University, India. As a master's student, Ms. Sen interned in the Energy division of PricewaterhouseCoopers, India where she analyzed the investment potential of power markets in Central Asian countries. In the future, she hopes to specialize in the areas of International Economics and Applied Econometrics.

Utsav Mulay completed his studies in Master of International Business (MIB) candidate at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He focuses on strategic management and smart energy development. Prior to Fletcher, Mr. Mulay co-founded his own 3-D printing company in New Delhi. He has also worked in Tanzania, India, and the Maldives on various different projects in a consulting and finance professional role. Mr. Mulay is interested in energy consulting and renewable solutions in East Africa. At the Applied Economics Clinic, Mr. Mulay worked on research projects and in assisting advocacy groups ensuring that Integrated Resource Plans for electric utilities are meeting their forecasted emission and pollution reduction targets.

Tatiana Marzan is a Hydropower Technical Analyst at Natel Energy. Her expertise is focused on water resource management, and climate change adaptation and resilience. Using her academic background and previous work experience at AEC, she began working on projects requiring technical expertise (GIS, remote sensing, statistical analysis) as well as policy insight (statutes and regulations). Ms. Marzan is comfortable with tackling issues that need a holistic approach, or require collaboration between multiple organizations. Ms. Marzan completed her studies as a graduate student in the department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning (UEP) at Tufts University. She has a B.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. Before enrolling in UEP, she worked as a water resource engineer for the Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) in Bangladesh.

Divya Gandhi completed her studies in the Urban and Environmental Planning department at Tufts. She is an Urban and Regional Planning major from India and has worked with the planning and development of the first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System in India. Her research has ranged from working closely with developing transportation systems to addressing infrastructural problems from social and behavioral perspectives, to also understanding how our brain cognitively reacts in different kinds of built environment. Ms. Gandhi’s thesis was on a Travel Behavior Analysis of understanding the role of built environment and socio-economic characteristics on trip-mode choices.

Ozden Onturk completed her studies as a Master of International Business (MIB) student at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy focusing on International Finance and Banking and Energy and Environmental Resource Policy, more specifically renewable/clean energy financing. Before Fletcher, she had been working in the financial services industry for about 4 years, in Istanbul, Turkey, in macroeconomic research, equity research in utilities and software industries, and investor relations in the banking sector.

Andrew Kimball completed his studies at the Fletcher School, concentrating in international environment and resource policy. Excited by the challenges the energy transition poses and having recently completed a summer position at an electricity supplier, he is directed his studies at exploring the impact of technological innovation on electricity markets. Before starting at Tufts, Mr. Kimball spent over six years in South Korea, first as a lecturer at an education university and then as the co-founder of a language school outside of Seoul.

Maryam Khaniyan completed her Masters at Tufts School of Arts and Sciences with an additional post-professional master’s degree in occupational therapy. Prior to joining Tufts, Ms. Khaniyan received her BS in occupational therapy and a MS in rehabilitation management back in her home country, Iran.
In 2013, she moved to the United States to complete her PhD in Gerontology at UMass Boston. After receiving her MS in this field, she decided to improve her clinical research skills by joining the occupational therapy department at Tufts. Ms. Khaniyan previously worked as a research assistant in several different projects at MGH Disparities Research Unit and Center for Social and Demographic Research on Aging. She has also worked at the Cognitive Aging and Memory lab where she collaborated in a research project on the relationship between long term and short-term memory and stress among older adults.

Marli Kasdan graduated from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. At Fletcher, she pursued an International Affairs degree, with a focus on international development and human security. Prior to coming to Fletcher, Ms. Kasdan received her BA in International Development and Political Science from Tulane University. She previously worked as a Research Assistant at the Payson Center for International Development, where she managed a research project on official development assistance for girls’ education in Nigeria, DRC, Cote d’Ivoire, and Ghana.

Ignacio Obejero Paz completed his Masters of International Business (MIB) candidate at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He studied International Banking and Finance and International Environmental Resource Policy, focusing specifically on energy finance. Prior to the Fletcher School, Mr. Paz spent nearly seven years in international business strategy consulting. At AEC, he assessed hedging strategies deployed by utilities to manage risk presented by the volatility of natural gas prices.
Mr. Paz has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Case Western Reserve University.
