“Having a research team that was willing and able to engage with Neighbor to Neighbor in ways that centered our organizing needs in Lynn was a unique experience for us as a smaller community-based non-profit.”
“AEC's support and partnership in providing research directly applicable to our mission at Neighbor to Neighbor of addressing the intersections of the housing crisis, the climate crisis, and the need for deeper democracy, was deeply meaningful to us. Having a research team that was willing and able to engage with Neighbor to Neighbor in ways that centered our organizing needs in Lynn was a unique experience for us as a smaller community-based non-profit. AEC's research helped us to more clearly articulate the need and the potential for applying environmental justice approaches and resources in our community in ways that are truly responsive to the real needs and priorities of those most impacted. We were able to use this research to help apply for a very competitive EPA EJ Community Change Grant that we came very close to being awarded. We hope to use this research more going forward, particularly in advocacy with this city of Lynn, as we continue to advocate for community-led solutions to environmental injustice and the housing crisis.”

“When existing fossil fuel stakeholders steer the conversation to mere incremental decreases in emissions, we can point to the evidence in the [AEC] study to show that full conversion is not only possible but beneficial.”
“Thanks to the Applied Economics Clinic for preparing the Fossil Fuel Replacement Case Study. It has been a valuable resource when speaking with local and state officials and the public about the issue of the last remaining peaker plant in Berkshire County. Laying out the case for conversion of fossil fuel peaker sites to renewable energy in detail and in terms of public health, beneficial economics (especially in the cases of reusing current energy sites and existing interconnections), and positive climate impacts bolsters our campaign to see as many peakers as possible convert to renewable energy and storage. We submitted the study to the Office of Energy Transformation Decarbonizing the Peak Focus Area Working Group (OET DTP FAWG), for consideration, and have referred back to it when the working group’s goal of full decarbonization needs to be reiterated. When existing fossil fuel stakeholders steer the conversation to mere incremental decreases in emissions, we can point to the evidence in the study to show that full conversion is not only possible but beneficial.”

“The scientific, engineering and policy expertise in these reports gives our environmental justice arguments the needed gravity to avoid being brushed off as simple nay-sayers...”
“As a community-based and led organization GreenRoots brings to the table the voices of our members -- the environmental justice populations of Chelsea and East Boston -- so often left out of the decision-making process. While we can speak forcefully and with authority to their concerns and realities, our ability to have that message viewed with credibility is strengthened by the support of technical, legal and policy experts with whom we partner. The Applied Economics Clinic is one of these valued partners. We have worked with AEC experts on expert witness testimony at the state's Energy Facility Siting Board (EFSB) for our fight against the Eversource-proposed East Eagle electrical substation; an evaluation of tree canopy equity in the City of Boston to justify greater investment in tree planting in neighborhoods like East Boston; and an evaluation of the process of applying for and receiving electrical interconnect agreements with local utility companies, such as assets in our microgrid project in Chelsea. The scientific, engineering and policy expertise in these reports gives our environmental justice arguments the needed gravity to avoid being brushed off as simple nay-sayers or forever complainers. Our arguments have validity and are rooted in both the data and conclusions of the AEC studies and the needs and lived experiences of our community members.”

“Often times, we look to AEC for data-driven advice and they produce reports that we can use in our programming.”
“Our organization is always seeking ways to speed a just transition to a zero-carbon world. It’s never a question of whether to support clean energy, it’s a question of how so that no one is left behind. Often times, we look to AEC for data-driven advice, and they produce reports that we can use in our programming. At our request, AEC is developing a data-driven supply cost curve showing the relative economics of how various measures can improve energy affordability for low- and moderate-income households. The report will inform our programming. We intend on sharing the results with other practitioners.”

“You have created a thorough, technical, yet simple to use reference tool.”
“Thanks for the work you and your team did on the flat roof project. There is no way we could have done such a thing. This project has application beyond Grove Hall as all urban areas have a significant number of flat roofs that have a lot of potential applications. I hope you have the ability to share the results widely, as you have created a thorough, technical, yet simple to use reference tool.”
